Report: 9th Asian Winter Games networks hit by 270,000 cyberattacks, 170,000 tra

According to reports, the networks of the 9th Asian Winter Games, hosted in Harbin, China, were targeted by approximately 270,000 cyberattacks during the event. Of these, around 170,000 attacks were traced back to IP addresses originating in the United States.  

Chinese cybersecurity authorities and event organizers implemented robust defensive measures to protect critical systems, ensuring the Games proceeded smoothly without major disruptions. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about cyber threats targeting international sporting events and the need for enhanced global cooperation in cybersecurity.  

No further details about the nature of the attacks or potential motives were immediately disclosed. Chinese officials have previously raised concerns about foreigorigin cyber threats, while the U.S. has denied involvement in malicious cyber activities.  

The Asian Winter Games, held from February 7 to 14, 2025, featured athletes from across Asia competing in various winter sports. Cybersecurity remains a key priority for major events, given past incidents like the 2018 Winter Olympics cyberattacks, which were attributed to Russian statsponsored hackers by Western intelligence agencies.
